Frequently Asked Questions
What is PolicyBenchmark?
PolicyBenchmark is an independent educational resource that helps small business owners understand commercial insurance. We publish in-depth coverage guides, carrier reviews, state-by-state requirements, and free interactive tools. We are not a licensed insurance agent or broker — we are a content publisher providing educational information.
Does PolicyBenchmark sell insurance?
No. PolicyBenchmark does not sell, bind, or underwrite any insurance policies. When you are ready to purchase coverage, we connect you with licensed insurance providers through clearly disclosed affiliate links. All purchasing decisions and policy agreements are between you and the insurance carrier.
How does PolicyBenchmark make money?
We earn revenue through affiliate partnerships with insurance providers. When you click an affiliate link on our site and request a quote or purchase a policy, we may receive a commission. This does not increase your cost. Our full revenue model is explained on our How We Make Money page.
Do affiliate partnerships influence your reviews or ratings?
No. Our editorial content — including carrier reviews, ratings, coverage guides, and tool outputs — is produced independently of our commercial relationships. Affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial conclusions, ratings, or rankings. See our Editorial Standards for details.
What types of business insurance do you cover?
We cover the major commercial insurance lines that small and mid-sized businesses need:
- General Liability Insurance
- Workers' Compensation Insurance
- Business Owners Policy (BOP)
- Commercial Auto Insurance
- Professional Liability (E&O) Insurance
- Cyber Liability Insurance
- Umbrella Insurance
- Directors & Officers (D&O) Insurance
Are your cost estimates accurate?
Our tools provide educational estimates based on publicly available industry data, including NCCI class codes, state rate filings, and industry cost surveys. Actual premiums depend on many factors specific to your business that only a licensed carrier can evaluate. Always obtain quotes from licensed insurance providers for accurate pricing.
How often do you update your content?
We review and update our content regularly. Coverage guides and carrier reviews are updated at minimum when significant rate changes, regulatory updates, or product changes occur. Each piece of content includes a "last updated" or "last verified" date.
How do I know which insurance my business needs?
Start with our Business Insurance Needs Quiz to get a personalized list of required and suggested coverage types based on your industry, state, and business profile. Then read the relevant coverage guides for deeper information on each type.
Can I trust the carrier information on your site?
We source carrier information from public filings, AM Best financial ratings, state regulatory databases, and direct testing of carrier quoting processes. We verify key facts before publishing and note the date of last verification. If you find an error, please contact us so we can correct it.
Is my state covered?
Our state guides currently cover select states with the highest search demand, with more being added regularly. Our tools cover all 50 states and Washington, D.C. for requirements checking, workers' compensation estimates, and general liability cost ranges.
